The first thing that you need to look at is the size of your project. Handymen typically work on small to medium sized projects. This can include everything from remodeling a bathroom or finishing out a room, all the way down to fixing a leaky faucet. They can work on improvement project as well repairs; it just depends on your needs. You can't call a handyman for large remodeling projects or home additions, but they can fix just about any common home improvement issue.
One nice feature of most handyman services that you won't find with a full-fledged contractor is that they don't charge mark up on materials. Most of the time the way things work is that your handyman will first come out to see what the job entails. Then from that assessment they will come up with a materials list. At that point you can go shopping, or they will get the materials for you. You will have to pay for the materials, but you will only have to pay the retail cost. They only charge for labor. If you use a contractor then they will not only charge you for the labor, but they also expect to make at least some profit on their materials.
At the end of the day the type of project that you have is probably the most important factor. If it is major, as in you want to add on a second garage or go up a story on your home, then the handyman service is probably not the way to go. But, for any small to medium sized project they can be a great and affordable option. You get a trained professional to do your project, and do it right.
